âYou okay?â Rice asked. âYou havenât said anything since leaving Quintosâs office.â
Harper sat in Riceâs car, arms crossed tight against her chest. Her lips were turned into a frown. The embarrassment and anguish at herself slowly dissolved into infuriation.
âI donât like Quintos,â Harper admitted. âI felt like he was accusing me of something. Like it was my fault for getting myself stuck in that situation. I only wanted to help.â
âI understand, Harper,â Rice said. âBelieve me, I do. There are always going to be people who blame others just because itâs easier than facing the fact. People blame prostitutes for being raped. Because they make a living out of it, theyâve got to want it, right? Well, the answer is not always. But there are people who disagree. And if you get yourself into a situation, people say itâs your fault because you made the move to do so. But, Harper, there are some people who know the truth. They arenât blind to it. Iâm one of them. Forget what Quintos says or thinks, all right? I think what you did was very brave and heroic.â
The corner of Harperâs lips curved in a slight smile. âDo you think so?â
âIâm a cop,â Rice reminded her. âI carry a gun, and Iâm trained in self-defense. I wonât be modest to say I can take down most of my colleagues. But even I am not sure if I would be brave enough to go undercover the way you did. That takes a special kind of courage.â
âThat means a lot,â Harper said softly.
âIâm being truthful,â Rice told her.
âI know,â Harper said.
âLetâs get going. Hopefully, we can end this soon so you, Olivia, and the girls can return to your lives.â
Riceâs cell phone rang, and she answered. After a moment, she ended the call and turned the ignition.
âWeâve got the warrant. Time to get the show started.â
Rice took the lead so Harper could give her directions.
Itâd been a lifetime ago since she first arrived at the house. Harper could only hope and pray she remembered the way.
Soon, an hour and a half passed by and they finally reached the familiar stretch of the road leading to the large white house at the end. The cars scattered around the building and the police jumped out.
Harper watched as they crashed through the door with a battering ram.
Gunshots rang in the air.
Harper gripped the handle of her door as she watched, feeling helpless.
She noticed the curtains pulled back in the window, then a man climbed out. He walked along the roof toward a nearby tree. The man jumped, missing the branch by almost an inch.
Harper left Riceâs car and ran to the manâs side.
âAre you okay?â
He released a groan as he rose to his feet.
âIâll be fine,â he muttered.
âGood.â Harper kicked him in the groin, forcing him to grab himself as he fell backward.
âHarper!â
She looked up to see Mai standing in the window.
âMai! Are you okay?â
âWhatâs happening?â
âThe police are here,â she explained. âWhere are the other girls? Are they with you?â
âBonita and Jenny in another room.
